Honoring Japanese design and traditions in San Jose, California

Nihonmachi translates from Japanese to English as Japan People’s Town. San Jose’s Japantown is one of the last three authentic Japantowns in the United States. Shea Properties worked with the neighborhood for almost a decade to develop 6th & Jackson, a project that would honor the community and its people. Waypoint was so pleased to be a part of creating a development that ultimately would be embraced by, and become a part of the fabric of the Japantown neighborhood. Waypoint provided design, fabrication and installation services for the wayfinding (inclusive of code and ADA signage), as well as the exterior signage for the project. Signage design was inspired by both the architecture and interior design of the development. With clean, contemporary lines, and a cool palette of natural woods mixed with black and white tones, the property speaks to modern Japanese buildings and spaces. The resulting signage leverages a natural wood substrate, tactile lettering and numbers with a striped pattern that accents the community’s stunning interiors. This 518-unit mixed-use project includes 18,546 SF of ground floor retail and was completed in late 2023. 6th & Jackson was designed by our fellow Seattleites at Ankrom Moisan and constructed by Swenson Builders.
